Greek version of Autism&Uni Best Practice Guides published

Posted on 24/09/202405/10/2024

We are excited to announce that the Autism&Uni guides are now available in Greek. Dr Despina Papoudi from the University of Thessaly, who coordinated the translations and the scientific editing, explains why the guides are needed right now.

In Greece, all students, including those on the autism spectrum, can participate in the nationwide exams to be admitted to Higher Education Institutions. In November 2022 a new law (ΦΕΚ Β 6069/28-11-2022) was introduced and students on the autism spectrum with a disability of at least 67% may be admitted to Higher Education Institutions according to their preference without participating in the nationwide exams and be included in the special category of those suffering from serious illnesses at a rate of 5% more than the fixed number of admissions.

This new law created a need to develop material in the Greek language to inform academic and administrative staff, the students and their parents about autism and the needs of students on the autism spectrum with guidance on how these students would be best supported in Higher Education. The Autism&Uni Guides were fit for this purpose because their initial development was informed by research and based on evidence-based practices. In addition, these Guides address important issues in clear, concise, and plain language and their content is easily understood by the academic staff as well as the administrative staff and the students.

Translation and scientific editing of the Autism&Uni Guides in Greek was carried out by the founding members of the “Network for Friendly University Campus for People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)” in Greece (University of Thessaly, Despina Papoudi; University of Macedonia, Christine Syriopoulou; Technical University of Crete, Malamatenia Zacharioudaki and Evangelia Krassadaki; Harokopio University, Katerina Antonopoulou and Aglaia Stampoltzi; Greek Association for Asperger’s Syndrome, Maria Iliopoulou).

Financial support for the graphic design and editing was provided by Dr Marc Fabri to whom we would like to express our gratitude for his time and continuous support. We are grateful to all who contributed to this work.
